Sonoran Dendritic Rhyolite: Hot Stone in Tucson

The Stone

Awhile back we posted some pictures of the first cabs we cut from this new material from Mexico:  Sonoran Dendritic Rhyoilite.  I’d picked up just a couple of slabs of the material from an online seller I know.  We put a satin finish on the first batch of cabs and that worked out great; the cabs were beautiful that way.  So that left finding some rough a top priority for buying during our trip to the Arizona shows.

The Buzz

First stop is alway Quartzite and the Desert Gardens show and the annual QIA Pow Wow.  Bingo, I found two dealers with rough. Perfect! One of them was the first to bring in the material and the guy who named it. And it is Sonoran, with an “n”, not Sonora. It learned that it was only coming out in small quantities because it was being dug by hand by only two guys.  I’m very pleased that we were able to get a few terrific hand selected chunks of rough, and I was very glad to get the seller’s help picking out good pieces as it was not easy to do.

We’ll start the cutting on it very soon.  In the end, this stoned turned out to be one of the major new hot stones in Tucson this year. Everyone seems to love it.
