In Search of Sonora Sunrise

Our Mission

Getting a supply of Sonora Sunrise rough was one of our missions during our trip to Quartsite and Tucson this year. Rumors were that it had been mined out. At least my “go to” supplier had none to sell. What we found was a spotty supply at very high prices. Most of what we saw was not the quality we were looking for. If we had to pay high prices at least we wanted the best.  And we did find some, although not as much as we would have liked. Having to set up and do two shows totaling 10 days cut into our shopping time. But here is one of the chunks we did get. Very, very nice.

The Lowdown

I also tried to get to the bottom of what was happening with the supply of this stuff. Is it mined out? I asked around and got some shrugs but also a couple of different explanations. It is clear the material comes as a byproduct of a large copper mine. One dealer said they mine had gone through the layer where this material occurs and there is no more now. The other explanation, more intriguing, is that the Sonora Sunrise material was sold off to a number of different dealers who started fighting amongst themselves and the mine owners simply quit selling the material. That had the sound of truth to it. But everyone agreees that no more is coming out now.  And the supplies are diminished, and the prices have tripled to quadrupled for the rough. Stay tuned as I learn more.Sonora Sunrise rough by Rogue Gems LLC

Coyote Highway

This is where we take our dogs for a walk here in Tucson. To the right is an arroyo or gulch which carries the storm water from the infrequent but occasionally severe winter storms.  What it carries most of the time is coyotes.  We hear them in the evening and early morning and have been…

Malachite

Wouldn’t this make for a special cup of Joe.  We saw this at our shattukite supplier’s booth. You see a lot of the same old rock you’ve seen everywhere at the rock shows in Tucson and then every once in a while something new or unusual.

Druzy Drops, Drilled or Cabochons?

These are large (about 30 mm from top to bottom) pear shapes out of duzy quartz on chalcedony from Uruguay.  They are entirely natural.  We plan to drill some sideways near the top and have some as cabochons to be mounted in prongs or in bezels.   We’re looking for input from our customers.  What’s…

Life After Tucson

Whew. We’re finished with our two Tucson shows, and they were a success. First the 6 day AGTA show at the convention center. And then for more days at the convention center at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society show. Just two days in between. We also squeezed in some whirlwind buying at the other…

Terrific New Gem Rough

The Tucson Electric Park and the adjacent “RV rock show” has evolved into the “go to” venue in Tucson for rough stone. The shows just keep getting bigger and better each year. For the uninitiated, it is a lot like Luke and Obi Wan walking into the Cantina in Star Wars. It is truly an…

Chrysocolla rough

We had a question for one of our best rough suppliers.  He wasn’t at his booth, but we spotted him walking swiftly through the show as if he were on a mission.   So we followed him and he led us to a pile of chrysocolla!  At a good price even.  We thanked him and asked…

Life in Quartzite

A lot of people are unaware that there are still remote places in the United Sates.  Quartzite is one of them.  It’s really just a wide strip of freeway in the desert east of Los Angeles where there are a couple of gas stations and a few local businesses that thrive for a few months…

Sonora Dendritic Jasper Designer Cabochons

Not too long ago we posted an image of a slab of new material from Mexico called Sonora Dendritic Jasper.  Now we have a small parcel of cabs and we’re very pleased with how they turned out.  We think they have terrific patterns and color contrast.   Since we are always trying to do things a…

Polychrome Jasper Has A Name

About three years ago we stopped by one of our favorite vendors in Tucson.  They import materials from Madagascar.  During our visit we saw a bin of cool rocks with interesting pastel colors in many patterns.  We asked what it was and were told it was just “off the boat” and didn’t have a name. …
